Items in Torchlight come in many different categories and rarities. The general rarities in Torchlight are trash, common, uncommon, rare, unique, and set.

Potions

Potions can be used in Torchlight to either regain health or mana, or to increase statistics. There is also a potion to refund all skillpoints the player has spent on their character.

Gold

Gold is dropped from most monsters and is used as the basic currency of the game. Gold is used to buy potions, scrolls, weapons, armor, enchantments, etc.

Armor

Armor items determine the base defence of your character and the amount of damage that you can receive from enemy creatures.

The better your armor item's rating, the less damage you take from creatures.

There are 7 different types of armor:

Belts
Boots
Chest armor
Gloves
Helmets
Shields
Shoulders

Weapons

Jewelry

Necklaces
Rings

Gems

Spells and scrolls

There are defensive, offensive and charm spells and for each spell, there are five levels.

Fish

Fish can be caught by the player from fishing holes that can be found in random areas of the game, a preset fishing hole can be found in town. Fish are caught by interacting with the fishing hole and playing a mini-game.

The main use for fish in Torchlight is to transform your pet into different types of creatures to give him different abilities and/or change his appearance.

Some fish can also be consumed by the player for a attribute bonus.
(Example: The bearded fish increases the player's defense rating by 20% for 120 seconds)
Some fish that are caught contain items, and can even contain other fish.

Fish size

3 sizes of fish can be caught, and the size determines the duration of the effect.

Normal fish containing no prefix in their name will transform your pet for 120 seconds.
Big fish containing the "Big" prefix in their name will transform your pet for 3600 seconds.
Giant fish can also be caught, but are proven to be very elusive. Giant fish have the ability to transform your pet permanently into what ever the giant fish is (example: Giant Ice Angel: Ice Elemental)

(Note: when you use a Giant fish you can mistakenly change it back into your original pet by transforming the pet two times on the same transformation; losing the effect of the giant fish and you would have to catch another one for the same effect.)
