Gems are socketable items in Torchlight , most of which are some form of Ember . Gems may be upgraded by Duran the Transmuter , who can combine two gems of the same type and quality into a gem of the next higher level of quality.
Gems may be removed from sockets by Gorn and Furl, two NPCs in town who can either destroy a piece of equipment to recover gems, or destroy gems to free up sockets in a piece of equipment.
